The glycam oligosaccharide notation is recognized by GLYCAM-Web when building via URL.  It is based on common practice and should be familiar to most glycoscientists. It is based on the common abbreviations given in Table 1 at this location. Monosaccharides are named starting with anomeric configuration, then the chirality, the abbreviation and linkage information, etc.

The most important differences from common notation methods are:

• There can be no spaces in the notation.
• The identity of the moiety at the reducing end must be specified explicitly (e.g., -OH or -OME).

For example chitobiose would be,
b-D-Glcp-(1-4)-b-D-Glcp-OH

The -OMe version would be:
b-D-Glcp-(1-4)-b-D-Glcp-OME

Branches are handled with square brackets. To specify an alpha, L rhamnopyranoside with a-D-Manp-(1-3)-a-D-Manp- attached at the three position and b-D-Galp-(1-4)-b-D-Galp attached at position four, you would use:
a-D-Manp-(1-3)-a-D-Manp-(1-3)-[b-D-Galp-(1-4)-b-D-Galp-(1-4)]-a-L-Rhap-OH
